Lyme Bay Winery
Traditional Devon cider makers
The Lyme Bay Winery is tucked away in the East Devon countryside just outside the village of Shute. They have been producing traditional Devon cider since 1992 and now have an impressive range to choose from.
At the factory they use modern techniques and processes to make cider in the traditional way. All the apples that are used in the cider come from a local farm and they are pressed and fermented in exactly the same way that has always been used here in Devon.
Because the fruit is local the Lyme Bay Winery cider has it’s own unique taste. You can sample the draft cider in some of the nearby pubs. There are three basic choices, all of which can be purchased in the shop or by mail order.
The Jack Ratt Scrumpy is named after a local smuggler. This is a still unfiltered medium sweet cider at 6% Vol. Scrumpy is defined in my dictionary as “a rough, strong cider brewed in south-west England”. In 2009 Jack Ratt Scrumpy Cider won the “Best Speciality Product in the South West” and “Three Star Gold” at the Great Taste Awards 2009, beating more than 4,800 other products and also taking the Triple Gold and Regional Speciality Product Awards.
Scrumpy is about 18 months old. If you would like something a little less rough but stronger then try the Jack Ratt Vintage, which is 2 or 3 years old with 7.4% Vol. and comes in either medium sweet or dry.
The third cider in the range is Lyme Bay Cider, a sparkling cider in either medium sweet or dry - you choose.
The shop is packed with examples of their expertise. You can buy the full range of ciders and country wines, also made in the Lyme Bay Winery. Again, using local fruit where it’s available there are around 30 different wines to choose from. These include such diverse choices as Elderberry, Parsnip and Sloe, all really ‘old-fashioned’ wines that have long been made by country people.
Add to this a delicious range of fruit and cream liqueurs and you can’t go wrong really. All their drinks are available by mail order or to purchase from the shop. If you’re not driving you can also taste the results of the careful work of the team.
Some of the nicest things, in my opinion, are the wooden gift boxes that you can buy as a present to take home with you or to treat yourself. These contain the most popular wines bottled in tall, thin bottles – really unusual and pleasing to the eye. If you like you can choose any two of the most popular wines, liqueurs or cream liqueurs to put in the gift box. You can even put together your own selection if you phone and ask.
